American Universities are the World's Best Engines of Innovation & Discovery

By Rajkamal Rao

So why does the US draw a disproportionate number of foreigners to its college campuses?

The American research university is arguably the world’s most powerful engine of innovation and discovery.  Most young students like to study in such a setting and be a part of the next big thing.

Dr. Jonathan Cole of Columbia University maintains a list of the great contributions of US universities to every day living.  Can you really imagine modern life without the following discoveries that we all now take for granted? [And mind you, this is just a partial list.  For the full list, check references at the bottom of this post].

If you want even more inspiration about how academics meets the world of industry, please take the time to read this superb New York Times profile of Dr. Robert Langer of MIT.  A chemical engineer by training, Dr. Langer has helped start 25 companies and has 811 patents, issued or pending, to his name. That’s not too far behind Thomas Edison, who had 1,093. More than 250 companies have licensed or sublicensed Langer Lab patents.

Pursuing higher education opportunities in the US can truly change your life.  And you don't have to attend any of the schools listed on this page either.
